Well, you use "desu" in sentences about yourself, like "Watashiwa baka desu." (I am an idiot.) At least, that's what I learned, and I learned from actual Japanese people. Hmm...I'll have to look it up....

I had that up there before. A friend of mine said that "desu" is only used when you speak of an inanimate object and "imasu" is for an animal or person.
